Ultimate Music Theory App Reviews

This app is amazing! I will absolutely be buying it for my kids.

I wanted to give this app a chance since I read some reviews of an out-of-print course book by Glory St. Germain (whose logo and course title are part of this app) where reviewers raved about the wonderful, clear and understandable explanations about music theory. This is what I was really looking for-- explanations of the how and why of theory. This expensive app is a bunch of flash cards with no explanation of the concepts. Rote memorization is the point. There is no discussion of how or why, so that one can really grasp what is going on. You can only choose whether or not you are confident or not about your answer. And the only way to be confident is rote memorization, not true understanding. Sure, some things lend themselves well to rote memorization,like terminology. But understanding key signatures, why and how some keys are related, etc., need explanation. Once one understands the how and the why, one can work out some answers. Rote memorization is the most unhelpful and most difficult way to learn. Actually, its not learning. Its memorizing. Its not understanding. I could practice mimicking phrases in a foreign language all day and sound fluent, but I wont know what I am saying or how to formulate new sentences. This is the most pricey app I have ever bought and I really wish I had my money back.

I had taken some music lessons as a child and forgot most of it. This app certainly was the answer for me in helping to regain that music knowledge. Thanks!

My teacher told me to download this app to review for my Royal Conservatory of Music Basic Rudiments Theory Examination and I am SO glad that I did. I didnt realize I had been saying some of the terms wrong. Oops! This is really going to help me get ready for my exam. Thank you.

Great app, offers a quick way to learn. Wish there are more explanations, though. Please release the intermediary and advanced versions! Cant wait to use them.

So easy to use and thorough

I love UMTs books, they are outstanding. So I had high expectations for the app, especially for the hefty $9.99. This app is simply flashcards that you tap on how well you knew the answer after viewing it. No multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank or tapping the correct answer. I was also surprised to see advertisements. I know UMT is capable of a higher standard, and am looking forward to the updates.

The smart flash cards are super helpful and only give you a few things to learn at a time. As you get more right they add another flash card to learn.

Played clarinet, second chair, first clarinet, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 grades. Even marched in the Mother Goose Parade. Had six kids at widowed and my brain went blank. Went back to college university actually 3.5 GPA and havent stopped studying since but not music until now. I have great expectations. I also hit my head one too many times so its a little rough around the edges. I really hope I can see this through before I make up my tenth bucket list. Wish me well all hey!
